Why freedom of information is important to us all

Information is one of the most important things to democracy. when people do not know what is happening in the society they are unable to be objective and make decisions that affect their lives.
This is the main reason why freedom of information is important to us all. Being unable to get a certain information leads our community into the past.
Information is not only a necessity for people, it is also an essential part of every good government. Bad governments need secrecy to survive.
Lack of information leads to corruption and inefficiency by allowing a small group of people to make decisions based on certain information that is not given to the people.
Information is very important to allow people to be objective when judging certain moves of a government and to be able to debate their actions.

Today, most governments want to hide their business under the excuse that making them public could threaten national security and public order.
In most cases governments treat the information as their property instead of making it something they hold and maintain to make the society better.
The right to know is crucial and it allows other basic rights to take effect. Democracy is based on the right of people to know and to participate in making decisions.
Many people think they have full access to the information on them but they are not aware they get only the amount of information that someone decided to give to them.
We read newspapers every day and watch TV but that information is actually there because someone wanted it to be shown.
The main problem occurs with the information that is hidden from the people but has enough power to change their lives forever. This can be very dangerous because in democracy it is important that people get proper information to make decisions.

Public bodies have an obligation to disclose information and every member of the community has the right to receive it.
This information includes all the records that are held by a public body such as documents, tapes, electronic recordings and many others, their source and the date of production.
It is important that the law makes sure that any destruction of information is treated as a criminal activity. This is crucial because there are many cases where people destroyed information after using it.

Informing the public about their rights and promoting a culture of openness within the government is the most important thing for improving information freedom.
Each citizen has a right to know, some of them are not even aware of that so it is also important to educate people that nothing in the world, especially if it has an effect on their lives is not allowed to be hidden.

When people become aware of this fact, freedom of information will become a reality.
Unfortunately today, despite the fact most governments swear that all information is transparent, there are still many things that are hidden from the people.
People have the right to know and it is a duty of governments across the world to give them the information.
