Oxblood Ruffin, a famous Canadian hacker, is a foreign minister of the Cult of the Dead Cow, which is a very well known hackers group. He is also the founder and the executive director of Hacktivismo, a current which seeks to apply the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to Internet users.

Ruffin is very active in human rights causes and is a vocal advocate of hacktivism. He has also written some important  articles for The Register and .net. A blog writer and a participant in both technology and human rights conferences, he is a very important figure online. The Right to Privacy of Information – Don’t Take It For Granted

The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution of the United states guarantees “the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.” This is generally referred to as the right of individuals to privacy. This basic right is one that is widely recognized throughout the modern world, and most forms of government, though not all, guarantee the right to privacy to varying degrees. The Universal Declaration on Human Rights – What it Means for All Humans

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a profound recognition of the basic right of humans to live in dignity no matter where on earth they were born or reside. The importance of this document for the welfare of humans is shown by the frequency of its translation. You might say it is the guiding light by which humans should ideally live. The thirty rights detailed in this declaration were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948 as a response to the atrocities of World War II. Although the Allies outlined four basic rights of humans in their Four Freedoms, the rights of free speech, assembly and the freedom from fear and want, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was the first global recognition of the most basic human rights that all are entitled to. As Eleanor Roosevelt, who was one of the original authors of the declaration, stated, these rights begin on a highly personal level. They must be in place in the home, the community, in places of education and work and everywhere of importance to individuals. She said without a concerted effort put forth by all in every situation, there cannot be progress towards peace and dignity for everyone on earth.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights has 30 articles, each one detailing specifics of the basic rights. Many of these ring familiar to people living in countries that attempt to respect human rights. While this document serves as an ideal for governments at all levels as well as organizations, businesses, families and any group of humans, in vast parts of the world these rights are merely an ideal, rather than accepted doctrine. In other parts of the world, people fear that the basic rights outlined by the UDHR are being eroded by factors as powerful as national security and corporate profits. The rights of all humans, regardless of where they live, what their religion is, their sex or their race, should be the ultimate basis for all human interaction.

The most basic rights of all are that all humans are born free and equal. This is the very first of the articles of the declaration. What this means for humans is that they should act in a spirit of brotherhood with all other humans, never denying them their dignity as people. All governments need to be careful that their policies or procedures do not limit the human rights of some of its citizens and not others. For example not providing stairlifts in a public place prevents access by disabled people or the elderly and therefore gives them less rights to services than others. Closely related to this concept are the articles condemning the use of torture and inhumane treatment along with the practice of slavery. Although many of us believe that the entire globe already operates according to these principles, we are incorrect in this belief. Other vital sections of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights revolve around basic protections under the law. Everyone should be treated equally, as laws apply to all, not just some. Online privacy – do we truly have privacy online?

Those of us Dan Brown fans have an idea how our internet life is monitored by the government. The reasons generally given by officials for such actions are regarding national security. This can be understood with the growing menace of terror hovering over our lives. But there is another side to online privacy we are worried about. Thousands of people are fired every day for expressing some strong comments about their bosses in some private comment boxes or chat rooms. Mark Zuckerberg, the man behind Facebook, recently said that the days of online privacy are over. There is always a note on such social platforms not to reveal any personal information but this again is contrary to the idea of these social network and dating sites where people love to flaunt about themselves. The security issues with such sites is a paradox in itself as everyone updates every little thing happening around in these sites and then later cannot complain about the security of such information.
