How Governments Can Promote Human Rights
Governments play a key role in protecting the rights of human beings as they are in a powerful position to guard the interests of their citizens proactively to ensure that their standards of life are improved and that they are able to achieve a full experience as far as enjoying their lifestyle is concerned. Rights are God-given and therefore should be guarded with respect and honor.
There are several ways in which Governments can engage in practices that are geared towards promoting the rights of human beings. These endeavors that can guarantee effective achievement of human rights include:
Legislation:
Governments are positioned to promote human rights through the creation of necessary laws that will act as the guiding principles towards the achievement of human rights. Parliaments should endeavor to formulate reliable legal channels that will encompass all citizens’ rights and cover for any legal loopholes that will, in any way, undermine their God-given rights.
Its important that Governments acknowledge that Human Rights are universal and that its necessary that they are covered by much needed legislation and legal parameters that will not only affect the way these rights are rolled out, but also act as reference points in times when there is needed necessary amendments.
Governments can also actively be involved in promoting human rights by having public awareness campaigns that are directed at educating the general public on their human rights and the ways in which they can recognize whenever their rights are being infringed. The Government possesses the necessary funds and resources that are key to achieving the ultimate human rights goals. Governments need to put aside funds that will be used to fund these endeavors and see them to their success.
Governments can conduct tours to remote areas of their countries to ensure that the residents are actively educated on their human rights because, too often, they are unaware of them. Using their constitution as the reference point, they can educate their residents on the proper ways to protect their rights and legal channels to follow whenever they are not observed.
Governments can also introduce Human Rights as a curriculum in educational institutions. This will have the positive effect of making children and college students know their rights at an early stage in life and can, themselves, negotiate for better treatment as far as their human rights are concerned.
Another way governments can actively promote human rights is through research to find which areas of the economy are significantly affected by human rights discrimination and indeed, which segment of a certain group of people needs special attention. For example, with effective research, governments might come to the conclusion that the youths’ human rights may have been infringed on through unnecessary arrests and detainment. This will act as the guiding principle towards seeking a better human rights platform for this particular group.
The government can work in liaison with Non-Governmental Agencies that are on the ground to argue for better rights for its citizens. Working hand in hand with these Non-profitable organizations will prove beneficial as they have the required statistics and international and national support to have the rights of citizens observed.
